Dr. Choi has a cross-disciplinary training in political science and anthropology. She holds a PhD in Political and Social Change from the Australian National University and a first MA in Political Science from Sung-Kyun-Kwan University (Seoul, South Korea) and a second MA in Anthropology from Gadjah Mada University (Yogyakarta, Indonesia). This background is well reflected in her research, which draws on theories and methods from political science, anthropology and sociology, and has been an asset to her teaching.
Dr. Choi joins Fulbright University Vietnam as a visiting faculty after spending five years at Leiden University (2016-2021) in the Netherlands and eight years at the City University of Hong Kong in Hong Kong (2008-2016). Previously, she was research fellow at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (formerly known as the Institute Defense and Strategic Studies) in Singapore (2005-2007). Dr. Choi’s research interests include democracy, elections, political elites, and women’s political advancement in Indonesia and Southeast Asia.
Dr. Choi has published in journals such as Indonesia, Journal of Contemporary Asia, South East Asia Research, Sojourn and International Feminist Journal of Politics. She published Local Politics in Indonesia: Pathways to Power (Routledge) in 2011. At Fulbright University Vietnam, her teaching courses include Ethnographic Research Methods, Women and Politics in Asia, and Youth and Society in Asia.
