Dear cherished friends of Fulbright University Vietnam,

The COVID-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc on our daily lives, causing a lot of uncertainties and new challenges. Yet, it has also brought out the best in many of us – those who have shown compassion and empathy and offered a helping hand to others during this extraordinary time. As Mother Teresa once said: “We cannot all do great things, only small things with great love.” All the selfless acts we have been witnessing during the past months have become our North Star, guiding us through this difficult period as we are forging ahead into an unpredictable future.

For that, I would like to take a moment to express my gratitude for how the Fulbright community has been “doing small things with great love” to support the frontline workers during this challenging time. In just two weeks, we successfully raised enough to buy three (03) Hyundai Solatis, two (02) Ford Transits, and one (01) general ambulance for COVID hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City and Binh Duong, where the pandemic has been hitting the hardest. I truly appreciate the compassion and generosity shown by not only our staff, faculty and students, but also by you, our friends and supporters. Thank you for believing in our cause and for giving even though all of us have been affected by the pandemic in one way or another.

Truthfully, I am in awe and heartened to see how our community shares the same faith in public service mission, one of Fulbright’s most important core values in everything we do. Despite the “darkness” period we are in, I am convinced that as long as each of us becomes “light”, we will shine more brightly in this time of extraordinary. We will remain vigilant and will give back to the best of our ability. We will draw strength from the values that define us and what we stand for.

Thank you for helping us to make a real difference.

My dear friends,

COVID-19 has proven difficult and exhausting. But there is nothing more encouraging to me than knowing how powerful collective cooperation can be. Being the epitome of the cooperation between the U.S. and Vietnam governments, Fulbright University Vietnam understands how crucial collective cooperation means for any organization, even nation, to thrive.

Originating from the Fulbright Economics Teaching Program (now the Fulbright School of Public Policy and Management) 26 years ago, Fulbright University Vietnam was in a unique position to co-host a virtual conference on “Prospects of Economic Cooperation between Vietnam and the U.S.” with Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. As the two nations are undergoing changes in administrations, the engaging exchanges amongst the scholars, researchers, and businesses as well as associations have brought practical contributions to the important dialogue, policy-wise, paving the way forwards for the Vietnam-U.S. economics partnership.

Despite being only an educational project in the grand scheme of this growing bilateral relationship, Fulbright University Vietnam is marching ahead in our journey to become a world-class institution in Vietnam for Vietnamese students. We are honored to be entrusted with great support, including a five-year programmatic grant of US$1 million from Galaxy Studio and Dragon Capital to advance research, hold dialogues on policy responses, offer executive education programs and classes on Natural Capital Management issues.

While these are some highlights we would like to share with you, please understand that we will not stop here. There are a lot more we can do to make a positive impact and we will keep trying to be worthy of your trust. By working together, looking out for each other and lifting each other up, we will get through this unprecedented time.

With the sincerest gratitude,.

Dam Bich Thuy
President, Fulbright University Vietnam
