Fulbright University Vietnam is excited to host a public talk with three professors from University of Leeds:

🔹Professor Andrew Thorpe, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures & Professor of Modern History

In his presentation, Professor Andrew Thorpe will discuss the approaches to, sources for, and conclusions that can be drawn from his research on modern British politics. These include the British political crisis of 1931; party politics in the Second World War; the place of British Communism in the international Communist movement (especially between the 1920s and the 1940s); and the long-term history of the Labor party since its formation in 1900.

🔹 Professor Sanjoy Bhattacharya, Head of School of History, University of Leeds &  Professor in the History of Medicine

Drawing on decades of research on the WHO’s smallpox eradication programmes, and the implementation across Asia, Professor Sanjoy Bhattacharya will discuss and question the harmful impact of the resilience of such white supremacy in the intersecting worlds of policy, practice, academia, research and funding, and call for the acute need to center Asian agency in international health.

🔹 Professor Andrea Major, Professor of Colonial History

Professor Andrea Major will give a talk on “By the Standards of the Time: Critiquing Empire in Mid-Nineteenth-Century Britain”. Her recent research projects have focused on the relationship between the British anti-slavery movement and imperial expansion and exploitation in India, exploring how the campaign against slavery in the west helped shape ideas about empire in the east.
