Virtual chat about mental health with Dr. Dang Hoang Giang

November 18, 2021, 20:00 – 21:30

Continuing the Fulbright Speakers’ Series: The World Beyond a Book, Fulbright University Vietnam is delighted to invite you to join us in a virtual chat with Dr. Dang Hoang Giang about an important topic that has yet to receive its proper attention: mental health.

As the world is gradually recovering from the pandemic, we all have learnt that we are more interconnected than ever before, that we rely so much on the daily social interactions. And as such, kindness and compassion are the keys to help us reconnect and forge through this unprecedented time.

Being a pioneering institution with a vision towards a more understanding and empathic society, where we thrive on the diversity and uniqueness of each individual, Fulbright University Vietnam is honored to host a public discourse on mental health with Dr. Dang Hoang Giang.

“I am terrified of my own episodes – they swallow me whole – they expose my pain, my loneliness, my sadness in my teenage years; they bring back the traumatizing bully and my resentment. In my dreams, I screamed out loud trying to convey my fear and my desperate cry for help, but no one heard me, no one understood.” – snippet from his recent book “Black Ocean – Stories from the world of the depressed”.

Black Ocean is a journey of patience and empathy that Dr. Dang Hoang Giang went through with the depressed, encouraged them to open up and share what they could not confide in anyone. In this book, we can get a glimpse into their intense and agonizing stories, where biases and the lack of understanding from the society, from family and friends, have taken away their chances to fully live and contribute, to be loved and to be happy.

More than just giving voice to the depressed, in hopes to erase the biases and barriers for them, Black Ocean also sheds lights to depression, unveil the many shapes and forms that it could take, its undeniable impacts and the treatments, as well as how we can help them live to their fullest potentials.
