As Vietnam’s first independent, not-for-profit liberal arts university, Fulbright University Vietnam proudly continues the path Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc (Tonkin Free School) had paved while incorporating the modern liberal arts education model. In this spirit, Fulbright University Vietnam organizes this international academic conference on the theme “Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc & Vietnamese Liberal Arts Education Model” to welcome a new and more comprehensive understanding of the liberal tradition in Vietnamese education in history as well as its longstanding values in contemporary global contexts.

The international academic conference ‘Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc & Vietnamese Liberal Arts Education Model’ aims to shed light on scholarly research and bring together different perspectives on one of the most important milestones in Vietnamese educational history, and the efforts to reconstruct an educational reform prohibited by the colonial government from late 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century. The conference will open up academic dialogues on the cultural exposure at that point in history, the ideologies and philosophies, and the influence and achievements of Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc. Over the discourses, the conference hopes to dive deep into the essence of liberal tradition in Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc, to learn from it and find out important implications that can help build capacity for the present Vietnamese educational system in the local, regional and global contexts.
