Professor Jonathan Pincus, a renowned development economist specializing in Southeast Asia will join Fulbright University as a visiting faculty member in Economics from the Fall semester. As Former Dean of Fulbright Economic Teaching Program (the predecessor of Fulbright School of Public Policy and Management) for more than 5 years, Professor Pincus guided FETP during a period in which the School emerged as Vietnam’s leading institution in public policy teaching and research. At FETP, he managed the two-year postgraduate program in public policy in collaboration with the Harvard Kennedy School and the Economics University of Ho Chi Minh City, and launched the Vietnam Executive Leadership Program, a policy dialogue series at Harvard University for senior government officials.
Prior to joining Fulbright, Professor Pincus was President of the Rajawali Foundation, an Indonesian philanthropic organization that supports policy education and research in Indonesia, and which established the Rajawali Foundation Institute for Asia at the Harvard Kennedy School.
Professor Pincus has held various teaching positions in Europe, the United States, and Asia has taken on numerous technical assignments with international organizations including the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Bank. As Former Chief Economist of Vietnam-based United Nations Development Program, he designed and implemented UNDP’s several high-level policy advisory and dialogue programs with the Vietnamese government. Before his UNDP assignment, he was a tenured senior lecturer in economics and faculty chair of the Masters Program in economics at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London.
His research has focused on issues of agrarian change, poverty, inequality, and labor markets. Professor Pincus has authored numerous books and articles on economic issues in Southeast Asia, including a forthcoming book on the Indonesian economy co-authored with Professor Gustav Papanek and M. Chatib Basri, former Minister of Finance.
He attended Oberlin College in the United States and holds master and doctoral degrees in economics from Cambridge University in the United Kingdom. Professor Pincus has lived and worked in Southeast Asia for three decades, including extended assignments in Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines.
