Esther Horat

Dr. Esther Horat is a social anthropologist specializing in Economic Anthropology.  

Esther visited Vietnam for the first time in 2006. Since then, she has completed several research projects involving long-term ethnographic fieldwork in different parts of the country. She is interested in affective economies and examines the different aspects of “Caring Capitalism”. Her current research in Vietnam explores the discourses about social entrepreneurship, different perceptions of a “good life”, and everyday practices of entrepreneurs contributing to social change.  

Her publications include the monograph “Trading in Uncertainty. Entrepreneurship, Morality and Trust in a Vietnamese Textile-handling Village” (Palgrave Macmillan) as well as articles in journals such as the Asia Pacific Journal of Anthropology and South East Asia Research 

During her PhD, Esther was part of the international research group Traders, Markets, and the State in Vietnam at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology. She obtained her Ph.D. from the University of Zurich.  

Esther joins Fulbright University Vietnam as an adjunct faculty member for the 2022 summer term and will teach a course titled Anthropology of Entrepreneurship
