Fulbright University Vietnam collaborates with MetaMinds Network to initiate “Mind Talks: Better Reader – Better Me”

HO CHI MINH CITY, VIETNAMFulbright University Vietnam (Fulbright), the first independent, non-profit, liberal arts university in Vietnam, announces the launch of “Mind Talks: Better Reader –  Better Me”, a joint effort between the university and MetaMinds Network, to encourage the habit of reading in young Vietnamese people.

According to research conducted in America, young people today read less frequently than any previous generation, and enjoy reading less than young people did in the past. This trend is also prevailing in Vietnam. In 2019, a survey on Vietnamese students’ reading habits showed that 26% never read, 44% read rarely, and only 30% read frequently. “Mind Talks: Better Reader – Better Me” is an online program of talks and discussions on inspiring books. Through a wide range of topics explored and guided by inspirational speakers, the program aims to encourage young people in Vietnam to read and develop a habit of reading, thus in turn, embolden these young people to influence their peers to read more.

The launch of Mind Talks also coincides with the Vietnam Book and Reading Culture Day in April, celebrated in Vietnam annually. In accordance with the Government’s Decision no. 1862/QD-TTg, and responding to Deputy Prime Minister Vo Duc Dam’s call to promote a nationwide campaign of self-study and reading culture in Vietnam and especially, its young generations, Mind Talks aims to provide a diverse and welcoming playground for the young people of Vietnam to openly explore, learn from, and connect with distinguished authors, key opinion leaders, influencers, thinkers and their peers about life-defining books. The online series of talks and discussions of Mind Talks hopes to encourage the young generations of Vietnam to engage with books on a personal level, and as a result, inspire them to “pay it forward” when it comes to positive impacts they wish to create for their community and society.

“The 21st century is reckoned as highly volatile and entailed countless challenges. To solve these critical issues that affect generations, it requires everyone of us to not only dare to dream, dare to act, but also instill in our young people the spirit of lifelong learning and never stop asking questions. That vision has been honored by Fulbright University Vietnam since our earliest days, and remains our fervent mission till this very day. I personally hope that ‘Mind Talks: Better Reader – Better Me’ will follow, and amplify, this tradition of Fulbright. Ultimately, through our partnership with MetaMinds Network, we hope the ‘Mind Talks’ series will contribute to the betterment of Vietnam, by cultivating, nurturing, and inspiring the mind and soul of the young people of Vietnam through a love for reading, who shall be our change-makers and leaders of the future.”  says Ms. Dam Bich Thuy, President of Fulbright University Vietnam.

“By initiating Mind Talks, we want to introduce to the Vietnamese youth good books that can help shape their foundational knowledge, skills and mindset. Furthermore, we want to create opportunities for them to learn from a wide variety of experiences, from multidimensional discussions and discourses brought about by our distinguished guests. While Mind Talks hopes to spread the message about the importance of reading by inviting motivational speakers to share their wisdom, knowledge, and intellect on the valuable lessons of great books, it has always been our mission at MetaMinds Network to empower the young generation of Vietnam to take on more responsibilities and widen their horizon. I am delighted and proud to be partnering with Fulbright University Vietnam in this great mission.” – Mr. Nguyen Canh Binh, President of Alpha Books and President of MetaMinds Network.

As a non-profit program and open-to-all public, the Mind Talks series will be delivered on Zoom, as well as livestreamed on its official Facebook and YouTube channels. Each season, Mind Talks will introduce a selection of 03 to 05 books related to a specific theme. Through the guest speakers’ point of views on the theme/books and their own experiences, Mind Talks hopes to inspire the audience to be more engaged with books and be able to reflect on their essences.

The very first season of Mind Talks will explore the theme “Ikigai – A reason for living”. From April to June 2022, there will be five (05) Mind Talks with guest speakers, seven (07) Book Talks offering book reviews, and an Ikigai panel discussion. Within this theme, four main subthemes will be discussed: (1) What is “a reason for living”; (2) Empathy vs. Diversity; (3) How to find what you are good at; and (4) How to contribute to society. The first Mind Talk with the participation of H’Hen Niê, Miss Universe Vietnam 2017 and Top 05 Miss Universe 2018, will take place on April 20, 2022.

In 2018, Ms. H’Hen Niê was named an ambassador for Room to Read, a global non-profit focused on literacy and girls’ education. Through Mind Talks, she hopes to advocate for the advancement of reading culture in Vietnam, as well as spreading the message of positivity among its young people.
