The global order is in transition, both politically and economically. The EU, whose internal market is still the largest economy in the world, is seeking to intensify and diversify its ties in the Asia Pacific region. In September, the European Commission published the EU’s Indo-Pacific Strategy that signals a vision for the EU’s role in the region. Implicitly, this is also an attempt to balance China’s growing influence in Asia and Europe. The success of the strategy hinges on Europe’s biggest powers: Germany and France, both of which may soon have new governments. So what can the region expect from Europe?
