Emerging challenges in higher education

Disruption, disruption, disruption! Either exciting or scary trends such as half of American colleges will be bankrupt in 10 to 15 years; jobs will be disappeared due to the AI and human’s activities will be replaced by machine; universal income and so on so forth have been frequently predicted. Laments about the traditional education have seemed lasting forever.

In Vietnam, most of the college students have still been struggling with foreign languages while machine is like to take the job of interpreters in a foreseen future.

Many initiatives have been experimented and the results are mixed. In such a circumstance, the life is still rolling over and the progress is continuing although more problems happen.

The role of the higher education is indispensable, but there are many emerging challenges and how higher education institutions deal with them? Timothy B. Brown: Since 2009, working with the office of Alumni Affairs and Development, Tim has been representing the Harvard Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences in the Asia-Pacific.  For close to forty years, Tim has worked to advance higher education on a global scale.

With a BA from the State University of New York (1979), an MA in International Relations from The American University (1982) and an EdD from Harvard’s Graduate School of Education (1991), international education is central to Tim’s career.

In March 2019, Tim celebrates ten years at Harvard.  He volunteers as a member of the Kirkland House Senior Common Room, serves as Faculty Fellow on the Men’s Ice Hockey Team and is an advisor to freshmen students as they negotiate their first year of college.

Tran Duc Canh: Canh has a diverse background and experience ranging from the public policy and management, political involvement, business investment, and education for forty years.

He held key leadership positions in the Massachusetts state government, from Director of Employment and Training, immigration, to Social Welfare division.

Canh was appointed by the Prime Minister to his National Council on Education and Workforce Development (2016-2021).

Tran received a Master’s degree in Political Economy from JFK-SG, Harvard, and have done extensive graduate course works in the field of labor economics at Northeastern University and social policy at Heller School, Brandeis University.

Vu Thi Lan: Lan is an approachable, innovative professional with over fifteen years of hands-on English teaching experience. With the advancement of emerging technology such as artificial intelligence, game-based learning, and adaptive learning, Lan and her project team successfully built two web-based ESL/EFL learning tools and an Android speaking practice app.

These innovative English learning programs are expected to be a game changer in the field of ESL/EFL by providing a more effective and fun way to learn and practice English at the learners’ fingertips.

Lan founded EPAS, an English Center offering online English courses and English writing assistance.  In addition, she often provides professional development training workshops (both online and face-to-face), whose beneficiaries are teachers of English and English-major college students in Vietnam. .

Dam Bich Thuy: Thuy’s first memories of school include studying by lamplight in the countryside outside her native Hanoi. Ever since, she’s considered education a precious opportunity.

Thuy wasn’t always an educator. To the dismay of her teacher parents, after graduating from university, Thuy became an entrepreneur, co-founding Vietnam’s first private foreign investment consultancy firm.

Thanks to a Fulbright Scholarship, Thuy studied management and finance in the United States at Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania. After completing her graduate studies, Thuy joined the Australia New Zealand Bank, helping set up ANZ’s investment banking business in Asia.

Ten years later, she was tapped to lead ANZ’s Vietnam operations, making her the first Vietnamese national to lead an international bank in Vietnam. Thuy holds degrees from the University of Hanoi and the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.
