Bio:
Dr Hoa Nguyen is an international consultant, educator, and researcher with a background in social work and over 15 years of experience working in the United States, New Zealand, and Vietnam. Born in Hanoi, Vietnam, Dr Nguyen received her higher education in the United States, earning her Master of Social Work and PhD in Social Work from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.
From 2016-2022, Dr Nguyen was a Senior Lecturer at the School of Healthcare and Social Practice at the Unitec Institute of Technology in New Zealand, where she received awards for her teaching and research. Her research is interdisciplinary, and community-based, and has contributed to the enhancement of New Zealand policies and community programs. She has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals. Currently, she provides external supervision for social workers and competencies assessment for the New Zealand Social Work Registration Board (SWRB). She is also a member of the SWRB Professional Conduct Committee.
In Vietnam, she coordinated the Social Work Education Enhancement Program (SWEEP), partnering with eight universities in Vietnam to train social work lecturers and educators from 2012-2016, when the profession was still new and emerging. Through her work with SWEEP, Dr Nguyen played a key role in establishing the first core competence standards for social workers in Vietnam and made significant contributions to the professionalization of the field. She also provided consultancy for UNICEF Vietnam and worked for UNDP and international NGOs while living in Vietnam.
