The Core Curriculum

Exploratory Courses

Beyond the Core: Exploring your Major

While completing the Core in your first two years, you’ll choose 8 Exploratory courses across three different areas of study to broaden your exposure to different modes of thought.

These courses represent an introduction to different majors and specially designed approaches to subjects for non-specialists; you may begin experimenting with your potential major through these Exploratory courses in these three areas: Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences, and Science and Engineering.

  Students will acquire the knowledge of human perspectives and the natural world through:

  • Foundational education in the liberal arts that leads to specialized studies in different majors, including arts, sciences, and engineering.
  • Focused studies on important questions, using well-honed methods of thinking across disciplines to address complex twenty-first century challenges.
  • An emphasis on the local challenges and opportunities for the development of Vietnam in a global context.

  Students will develop the following four intellectual and practical competencies for future success:

  • Innovative and Creative Thinking — The capacity to combine or synthesize existing ideas, images, or expertise in original ways characterized by a high degree of innovation, divergent thinking, and risk taking.
  • Reasoning — A systematic process of exploring issues, questions, or objects through careful analysis of evidence resulting in informed conclusions or judgments.
  • Critical Thinking — A habit of mind characterized by the comprehensive exploration of issues, opinions, ideas, and events as a mechanism for formulating a conclusion.
  • Effective Communication — A purposeful presentation to increase knowledge, to foster understanding, or to promote change in the listeners’ attitudes, values, beliefs, or behaviors.

  Students will form positive attitudes that foster lifelong learning and commitment to society as good citizens through the following associated competencies:

  • Civic Engagement — To make a difference in the civic life of our communities through activities of personal and public concern that are both individually life enriching and socially beneficial.
  • Lifelong Learning — Skills for purposeful learning, undertaken on an ongoing basis with the aim of enhancing knowledge.
  • Ethical Reasoning — Inquiring about human conduct through assessment of personal values and the social context of problems. Students will also recognize ethical issues in a variety of settings, dilemmas, and ramifications of one’s actions.
  • Collaboration — Behaviors to successfully function as part of a team including interaction, effort, and quality of input.
