At the “Keep Swimming – Whether with or against the tide, embrace the flow of life” talk at Fulbright University Vietnam, former professional swimmer Nguyễn Thị Ánh Viên left a deep impression on the Fulbright community with her heartfelt stories. She shared about the challenges and sacrifices behind her many championship medals, as well as the motivation that drives her in her new journey – transitioning from a competitive athlete to a coach, mentor, and advocate for water safety through her “Drowning Prevention” project for children.

“Little Mermaid” Ánh Viên shares her story with the Fulbright community.

Inner strength and family as a source of motivation

1. As a champion swimmer, how did Ánh Viên overcome moments of doubt and the pressure to win?

There were countless times when I wanted to give up. I thought I wouldn’t be able to keep up with the intense training set by my coach. In some competitions, I felt the pressure even before diving into the pool, I feared losing before I even started.

Being away from home since the age of 14 to train with the Vietnam National Swimming Team, I often felt lonely. Swimming is a solitary sport, when you’re in the water, you can’t talk to anyone. Those were the moments when I felt the loneliest, left alone with my thoughts.

Sometimes, I imagined an angel on one shoulder and a devil on the other, whispering different things. ‘You’re exhausted, why not quit?’ But then another voice would remind me, ‘If you give up now, you’ll lose the medal.’ I guess my angel won more often, which is why I am where I am today.”

2. How did Ánh Viên handle loneliness and the constant race against time?

My motivation came from within, pushing her limits rather than chasing external expectations or standards. “I always reminded myself that if I wanted to excel in my chosen sport, I had to train both my mind and body with discipline and perseverance. More than just thinking about it, I had to act on it.”

Each day, Viên would reflect: “How can I swim faster? How can I improve?” I constantly researched new swimming techniques online, gradually increasing her practice intensity and distance. Looking back after months of training, you could always see your own progress.

When facing competition pressure, Viên maintained a growth mindset. If I give it my all and still don’t win, at least I know I’ve surpassed my previous self. Each competition is more about witnessing my own progress than about winning medals.

Above all, my family is my strongest support system. Whenever I feel overwhelmed by the pressure, I would call home. Simple words from my parents, like “Just do your best” and “No matter what, you are still our daughter”, are enough to ease the burden and reignite my motivation.

The power of giving back

3. Why did Ánh Viên choose to become a swimming coach after retiring?

Viên’s desire to teach swimming began during her professional career. “Back then, I was solely focused on swimming—perfecting my technique. But over time, I felt a growing urge to contribute and make a broader impact on society.

I started noticing heartbreaking news about children drowning, especially in rural and mountainous areas where swimming education and infrastructure are lacking. I knew I had to act. I wanted to pass on my swimming knowledge to help prevent these tragedies.”

Ánh Viên was fortunate to receive sponsorships and scholarships for international swimming training, shaping her career. Now, she is paying it forward by sharing her expertise and creating opportunities for young swimmers.

Ánh Viên hopes to pass on her swimming knowledge to the next generation and the broader community.

4. How does Ánh Viên feel about this new chapter of her life?

Today, Viên finds joy every day in working with her students and seeing them improve. However, her transition from athlete to coach was not without challenges.

“Being a great swimmer is one thing; being able to teach and communicate those skills is another. At first, I had to invest a lot of time and effort into developing teaching materials and customized training plans for different types of learners. Even in real lessons, I had to constantly adjust my teaching approach to match each student’s needs.

This experience has taught me that every new journey has its struggles, but with dedication, passion, and the right people by your side, any challenge can be overcome.”

Future plans and aspirations

5. What are Ánh Viên’s upcoming projects?

In the near future, Viên plans to expand her swimming club’s facilities to accommodate more students. More importantly, she and her team are working on a nationwide water safety project, aiming to teach swimming and drowning prevention to children across Vietnam—starting with her hometown, Cần Thơ.

6. What message does Ánh Viên have for young people?

“No matter what you do, always think about giving back and helping your community. “

Fulbright University Vietnam wishes Ánh Viên continued success and hopes she will keep inspiring the next generation!
