Recently, Fulbright University Vietnam hosted a distinguished panel discussion attended by the program judges and youth delegates of the Ship for Southeast Asian and Japanese Youth Program (SSEAYP) – the premier government‐sponsored exchange initiative connecting young leaders across Southeast Asia and Japan since 1974 (Vietnam joined in 1996). Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of both SSEAYP and the Liberation and Reunification of Vietnam, the event celebrated how successive generations of Vietnamese participants have carried the nation’s culture and identity onto the world stage.

President Scott Fritzen delivered a warm welcome to the speakers and attending students, and presented a souvenir gift to the guest speaker.
The ceremony opened with a welcome address from Dr. Scott Fritzen, President of Fulbright University Vietnam, who presented commemorative gifts to each speaker. Dr. Fritzen remarked:
“I often hear participants describe SSEAYP as a transformational experience. Engaging with peers from so many countries—far beyond your usual environment—pushes you out of your comfort zone and places everyone on equal footing, fostering a shared understanding of our interconnected world. Through community‐service projects and collaborative problem‐solving aboard the ship, lives are profoundly changed. This perfectly embodies Fulbright’s belief in the power of education: it’s not about where you go, but the spirit and engagement you bring to your community. I’m delighted to see more Fulbright students embrace SSEAYP, as it represents our core value of global‐mindedness and service to something greater than oneself.”

A representative of the Selection Committee and participating youth shared their experiences from the SSEAYP program.
Following the opening remarks, SSEAYP delegates shared vivid accounts of life aboard the Nippon Maru during its 38‐day Pacific crossing. Highlights included:
- Diplomatic Ceremonies: Formal greetings with government leaders at each port of call.
- Official Receptions: Intimate dinners with Ho Chi Minh City’s leadership at the Independence Palace.
- Homestays: Four‐day cultural immersions with host families in Indonesia and Japan.
Participants also organized a rich lineup of cultural events on board:
- International Folk Performances: Delegates donned their national dress to present traditional songs and dances.
- Vietnamese Coffee Corner: Showcasing the journey of Arabica beans from Dalat to the perfect cup.
- Tet Festival Experience: Sampling festive sweets, wearing áo dài, and exchanging red envelopes.
- Embroidery Showcase: Exploring the fine art of Vietnam’s traditional craft villages.
These activities deepened students’ appreciation for Vietnamese heritage and equipped them to become cultural ambassadors. The panel concluded with a Q&A session, where judges and alumni offered tips on crafting standout applications for SSEAYP 2025.

Stepping aboard SSEAYP is more than an overseas voyage—it’s a journey of personal transformation, a reaffirmation of national pride, and a commitment to carry Vietnam’s cultural legacy to the world. Whether you’re an academic, an artist, or an aspiring leader, if you share a passion for showcasing Vietnam on the global stage, SSEAYP offers an unparalleled platform to serve as a cultural bridge between nations.
