Family serves as a vital source of emotional support and a sturdy launchpad for growth. For Mai Đắc Vọng, a first-year student at Fulbright University Vietnam, family traditions also ignite his love for his homeland. This immense pride and inspiration come from his grandfather, who actively participated in the nation’s defense during its tumultuous years of wartime. Through the shared historical experiences and deep family connections, Vọng developed a profound passion for history, leading him to pursue his studies at Fulbright University. His journey is a heartfelt tale of the connection between youth and love for family, country, history, and the future.

Inspired by Grandfather’s Stories

From a young age, Vọng cherished moments spent with family, eagerly listening to his grandfather’s stories about the past—stories of the nation, the homeland, and their family’s journey. His grandfather shared vivid memories of days under the shadow of conflict, recounting how he bid farewell to his family to join the efforts to protect the nation.

“I didn’t fully grasp the magnitude of his stories back then, but each word painted vivid pictures of that time in my mind,” Vọng reflects. “It was a mix of nostalgia and fascination, sparking a yearning to visit the places he described and witness what he experienced. That was when I first realized my love for history. My grandfather became my first teacher and the inspiration that awakened my passion for this subject.”

Guided by this early love for history, Vọng excelled academically, winning first place in the city-level History Competition in ninth grade. Determined to pursue his interest further, he enrolled at Lê Quý Đôn High School for the Gifted to specialize in history. Over three years, he deepened his knowledge of the nation’s past, gaining a deeper appreciation for his grandfather’s stories and the sacrifices of earlier generations.

An Unspoken Farewell

Vọng’s achievements in history continued to grow. In 11th grade, he received the gold medal at the 30/4 History Olympiad. “Winning that medal was a moment of overwhelming joy,” he recalls. “It was a testament to my dedication and my love for history.”

As he prepared for the National History Competition in his final year, tragedy struck. “The night before the competition, my father called me with urgency in his voice. ‘Your grandfather’s health is declining. Come home to see him.’”

The sight of his grandfather on the hospital bed, surrounded by medical equipment, left Vọng deeply pained. “I wanted so badly to achieve something to make him proud, to show him that his stories and strength were my guiding light. But before I could share my success, he passed away the next day,” he says.

Months later, Vọng fulfilled his grandfather’s dream, achieving a high rank in the National History Competition and earning a spot at Fulbright University Vietnam. “As I looked at his photograph, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude. My grandfather remains my foundation, the spiritual support that continues to guide me in my passion and successes. I know he would be proud.”

Pursuing a Passion for History at Fulbright

Vọng’s journey didn’t end there. Nurturing his love for Vietnam’s rich history, he chose Fulbright University Vietnam to further his studies. “Fulbright offers a liberal arts education, which allows me to reflect, explore, and pursue my passions. Here, I hope to gain a broader and deeper perspective on history, fostering pride in our nation’s traditions while connecting the past to the present,” he shares.

At Fulbright, Vọng is committed to delving into history while exploring other fields to become a well-rounded individual. “This school provides me with opportunities to develop academically, personally, and professionally, preparing me for the dynamic world ahead,” he says.

Vọng believes that understanding history is essential for the younger generation. “When young people comprehend the sacrifices made by previous generations, they cultivate gratitude and a sense of responsibility. This inspires them to continue building and contributing to our nation’s progress,” he explains. He advocates starting small by helping those around us, supporting local communities, and eventually contributing to Vietnam’s growth.

Mai Đắc Vọng’s story emphasizes the importance of history in inspiring young people, helping them understand the value of peace and freedom, and motivating them to strive for a brighter future.
