Bio:
Dr. Xavier Martin G. Bautista is a macroeconomist whose research focuses on understanding how the microeconomic decisions, such as consumption, saving, labor supply, and housing, influence macroeconomic outcomes. His work to date covers household debt, consumption, financial inclusion, labor markets, spatial economics, and fiscal policy.
While he was a graduate student in Houston, Xavier lived through a pandemic, severe floods, a winter storm accompanied by a prolonged power outage, a national student loan crisis, and various other adverse macroeconomic events. These experiences made him more attentive to how
households make decisions and the differences in their responses to the same event, leading to a research agenda at the intersection of macroeconomics and the economics of the household. Using computational and econometric methods, he reconciles theory and data to address real-world issues, which he incorporates into his teaching.
He received his Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Mathematics from Brandeis University and his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Houston. Before joining Fulbright University Vietnam, he was a Research Fellow at the Sim Kee Boon Institute for Financial Economics at Singapore Management University.
