The Applied Mathematics program at Fulbright University Vietnam is celebrating remarkable achievements. Seven out of the ten students in the graduating Class of 2025 have secured full scholarships for PhD and Master’s programs at esteemed universities across the US, Singapore, and Europe. This exceptional success provides these talented individuals with a springboard to further their expertise in world-class academic settings.

The talented students are:

Nguyễn Công Thành (on the left) – Full scholarship for the PhD program in Statistics from the following universities: University of Michigan – Ann Arbor, USA (ranked 7th nationally in Statistics), National University of Singapore (NUS – ranked 8th globally in Statistics and Data Science), and Iowa State University, USA (ranked 19th nationally in Statistics). Also admission to the Master’s program at Purdue University, USA (ranked 22nd nationally in Statistics).

Nguyễn Hoàng Nhật Tân (white shirt with red cap) – Full scholarship for the PhD program in Statistics at the University of Illinois at Chicago, USA (ranked 40th nationally in Statistics).

Lê Thị Hồng Hà – Full scholarship for the PhD program in Statistics and Data Science at both the National University of Singapore (NUS – ranked 8th globally in Statistics and Data Science) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore.

Nguyễn Hoàng Ngọc Hà – Full scholarship for the Master’s program in Operations Research at William & Mary University, University of Massachusetts Amherst, and Wake Forest University, USA.

Trần Khuê Tú – Scholarship for the Master’s program in Statistics at University of Massachusetts Amherst, USA, and Wake Forest University, USA.

Hoàng Dũng Vũ Minh – Scholarship for the Master’s program in Mathematics at KU Leuven, Belgium.

Hà Huy – Scholarship for the Master’s program in Operations Research at William & Mary University, USA.

Furthermore, the remaining graduating students have already received job offers from prominent companies such as Zalo, even before their commencement.

These outstanding outcomes underscore the high-caliber education offered by the Applied Mathematics program at Fulbright University. Our Applied Mathematics students are highly sought after by leading universities and top-tier companies due to their robust foundational knowledge, well-developed independent learning and research capabilities, and extensive practical experience gained through diverse projects.

Sharing his pride in the Applied Mathematics program’s success, Dr. Nguyễn Trung Hiếu (PhD in Mathematics, University of California San Diego, USA), currently the Associate Dean for Curriculum at Fulbright, stated: “The Applied Mathematics curriculum at Fulbright is meticulously designed to ensure comprehensive coverage of contemporary mathematical principles while providing in-depth knowledge directly applicable to real-world challenges.”

Employing an active learning and teaching approach, each class fosters collaboration between students and instructors to explore course material, tackle challenging problems, and refine skills through practical projects. Students cultivate independence by engaging in self-directed learning, such as reading materials and solving exercises, while also developing teamwork skills through collaborative project work.

Adding to this, Dr. Trần Vĩnh Linh (PhD in Mathematics, Rutgers University, USA) emphasized the supportive Fulbright community: “Thanks to a very low faculty-to-student ratio compared to most universities in Vietnam, Fulbright students benefit from significant support from their professors. They have ample opportunities to connect with faculty outside of scheduled classes, in self-study courses, and through scholarly activities like seminars and conferences. Our students actively participate and excel in competitions such as the National Student Math Olympiad and the International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC).”

Applied Mathematics students exceled in National Student Math Olympiad 2024.

The Applied Mathematics program at Fulbright is further enriched by its highly reputable faculty members, who facilitate access to valuable short-term courses such as Application-Driven Mathematics at VinBigData Institute and the Bayesian Statistics Summer Program at the Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics. In these programs, students receive mentorship from leading professors, significantly enhancing their prospects of securing graduate scholarships at prestigious institutions.

Continuing this thought, Dr. Lê Nhật Tân (PhD in Financial Mathematics, University of Wollongong, Australia) highlighted the interdisciplinary nature of Fulbright’s liberal arts education model: “The liberal arts foundation exposes students to courses from diverse disciplines such as Finance, Computer Science, Econometrics, and Sociology, enabling them to address real-world problems through the lens of Applied Mathematics.”

This interdisciplinary knowledge, coupled with essential skills in programming, modeling, and big data analysis, allows our graduates to seamlessly transition into various professional environments within fields like Quantitative Finance, Insurance, Data Analysis, and Supply Chain Management. Students also benefit from numerous internship opportunities with major companies like WorldQuant, Zalo, and Viettel, facilitating their career entry and professional growth.

The achievements of these students are a well-deserved recognition of the dedicated efforts of both the faculty and the students within the Applied Mathematics program at Fulbright University. “My hope is that more students will explore mathematics courses at Fulbright in the future, not only to broaden their career horizons but also to discover the practical power of Mathematics and realize that studying Mathematics at the university level—especially at Fulbright—is a vastly different experience from high school mathematics. I wish everyone the best in discovering their passions and boldly pursuing Applied Mathematics, even if they haven’t traditionally seen themselves as ‘good at Math’ or considered this field before,” shared Dr. Nguyễn Trung Hiếu.
