Fulbright University Vietnam has been granted candidate for accreditation status by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE). This is not only a major academic milestone reflecting Fulbright’s commitment to global educational quality and ongoing development, but also a meaningful step forward in Vietnam’s broader goal of internationalizing its higher education system.

NECHE is one of the most respected accrediting organizations in the United States, officially recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. With over 140 years of history, NECHE evaluates and accredits higher education institutions around the world, including prestigious universities such as Harvard, MIT, and Yale. Its rigorous standards ensure that accredited institutions provide exceptional academic experiences and adhere to best practices in education.

Candidacy status indicates that Fulbright meets NECHE’s initial recognition and is progressing toward full accreditation. According to NECHE’s Policy on the Meaning and Criteria of Candidacy, degrees earned and issued by an institution holding candidacy status are considered by the U.S. Department of Education to be from an accredited institution.

As the first university in Vietnam to be granted candidacy in NECHE’s comprehensive accreditation process, Fulbright University Vietnam is continuously working to build an academic environment that meets international standards—an environment where Vietnamese and regional students alike are empowered to thrive.

Dr. Kathleen Hewett-Smith, Dean of the Undergraduate Program, affirms: “Pursuing NECHE accreditation reflects Fulbright’s commitment to delivering an American-style education that is deeply rooted in Vietnam’s culture and society—one that equips students not only with the knowledge and skills for a successful career, but also for a meaningful life.”
