On December 15, 2024, in anticipation of the official launch of Metro Line 1 (Ben Thanh – Suoi Tien), Fulbright University Vietnam students had the opportunity to explore and experience this state-of-the-art urban transportation system. This was not just an ordinary field trip but also an occasion for students to delve deeper into the technological and architectural significance of the project and its role in connecting downtown Ho Chi Minh City to the Saigon Hi-Tech Park, the future home of Fulbright University Vietnam’s new campus.

Diverse Perspectives on Metro Line 1

Metro Line 1 is equipped with advanced technology designed to ensure safe and energy-efficient operations as it prepares for its official opening on December 22. Fulbright students witnessed the automation systems in action during the trial run, observing the punctuality and efficiency of the system.

The station architecture left a strong impression as well. Each station features unique designs that blend modernity with the urban landscape, creating new landmarks for Ho Chi Minh City. Notably, Ben Thanh Station, the starting point of the Ben Thanh – Suoi Tien line, is not only a transit hub but also a cultural icon with its signature lotus-shaped dome, which provides natural light to the underground levels. Meanwhile, Opera House Station showcases a ceiling adorned with brown iron patterns, echoing the architectural style of the Ho Chi Minh City Opera House.

The trip was made possible with the support of the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railway Management Authority, HCMC Urban Railway Company (HURC) and HURC Youth Union. During the visit, Fulbright students were guided by technical teams who offered in-depth insights into the operations of a modern metro system. This invaluable experience provided students with a comprehensive understanding not only of transportation infrastructure but also of how public transit systems serve communities and enhance urban living standards.

Looking Ahead: Fulbright’s New Campus at Saigon Hi-Tech Park

In 2026, Fulbright University Vietnam will officially inaugurate its new campus at Saigon Hi-Tech Park (District 9, Ho Chi Minh City). With Metro Line 1 connecting District 1 to the Hi-Tech Park, commuting for Fulbright students and faculty will become more convenient, taking less than 30 minutes with a student-friendly monthly fare of only VND 150,000.

The metro system promises to bridge the gap for students traveling from various parts of the city to Fulbright’s new campus at Saigon Hi-Tech Park.

The route from Ben Thanh Station to Suoi Tien, near the Hi-Tech Park, not only shortens travel time but also offers an opportunity to experience an environmentally friendly and modern mode of transportation. This metro system is expected to become a vital link for students across the city, enhancing the connection between academic learning and real-world applications. Metro Line 1 symbolizes Ho Chi Minh City’s dynamic transformation, and for Fulbright students, it represents connectivity, growth, and a future-oriented vision.

This journey is just one of many extracurricular experiences organized by Fulbright University Vietnam in collaboration with local authorities, aiming to provide students with practical learning opportunities that foster holistic development.
