Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Phuong Cham on her latest monograph “Hanoi Sidewalks – Interactive Multi-Dimensional Space” (Via He Ha Noi – Khong Gian Da Chieu Tuong Tac).

The sidewalk, even though merely a small physical space, contains a whole open society. The monograph “Hanoi Sidewalks – Interactive Multi-Dimensional Space” consists of 4 chapters: Research history and approaches; Hanoi sidewalk – multi-functional space; Hanoi Sidewalk – Space of interactions, settlements, and negotiations; and Hanoi Sidewalks – Multi-dimensional Perspectives. In the upcoming virtual chat, Assoc. Dr. Nguyen Thi Phuong Cham will explore Hanoi’s sidewalk culture from theory to reality, through diverse perspectives, experiences, and outlooks on different culture and society aspects.

Fulbright Speakers’ Series is a quest for knowledge and understanding with diverse incisive viewpoints of prominent authors, both in Vietnam and globally, venturing into a myriad of topics ranging from development history and current Vietnam in the context of globalization, to the importance of mental health in being a compassionate community member.

About the speaker:

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Phuong Cham is currently the Director of the Institute of Cultural Studies, the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Vietnam Cultural Studies, and the Academy of Social Sciences’ Lead Faculty for Culture – Linguistics.  In 2005, she received her Doctoral degree in Cultural Studies from the Institute of Cultural Studies. Her thorough research over the years has been published in multiple monographs, scientific articles in many distinguished Vietnamese and foreign journals, such as “Hanoi Sidewalks – Interactive Multi-Dimensional Space”, “Cultural diversity in contemporary social life”, “The culture of local ethnic minorities in the Central Highlands: Traditions, changes and emerged problems”, “Kinh culture at Kinh Dao”, etc. Assoc. Dr. Nguyen Thi Phuong Cham has received many awards from the Vietnam Folk Arts Association and the Hanoi Union of Literature and Arts for outstanding scientific research such as the Award for Excellent scientific research “The suburban village and cultural change (Xuan Dinh village, Tu Liem district, Hanoi)” (co-authored with Do Lan Phuong) in 2016 and Second Prize for “The role of Culture and Lifestyle in Sustainable Development in Tay Nguyen” (co-authored) in 2015.
