Ian Bickford comes to Fulbright after thirteen years helping to build innovative new high school and college programs as part of Bard College’s international network. He has served since 2016 as Provost and Vice President of Bard College at Simon’s Rock, where highly motivated, younger students begin college after the 10th or 11th grade.
The model at Simon’s Rock, of which Dr. Bickford is also an alumnus, inspired Bard’s development of tuition-free early college programs serving under-resourced communities in New York City, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and elsewhere. Dr. Bickford helped to launch several of these campuses and served as their academic dean. He was also the founding dean of Bard Academy, a private, two-year high school program housed on the Simon’s Rock campus.
Additionally, Dr. Bickford has been deeply involved in Bard’s efforts to establish high-quality educational opportunities in Myanmar, including an ongoing partnership with the Parami Institute for Liberal Arts and Sciences and planned development of Parami University.
A specialist in 17th-century British literature, Dr. Bickford holds a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley; an M.A. from Stanford University; and Ph.D. from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. His recent research charts the often obscure channels of John Milton’s influence in the Americas.
