Call for Papers: Exploring Science and Technology Studies in Southeast Asia and the Asia Pacific Region

  • Date: May 18-19, 2024.
  • Location: Fulbright University Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

The interdisciplinary field of Science and Technology Studies (STS) emerged during the late twentieth century with an emphasis on the global North; in particular institutions in North America and Europe, with the Asia Pacific, and in particular the Southeast Asian regions long neglected. However, the increasingly prominent role of the Asian Pacific region has rendered it a major source of scientific and technological innovation with global impact.  This shift in geographic influence necessitates a shift in intellectual interrogation.

This workshop addresses the need for a greater regional perspective in STS  by bringing together scholars of Science and Technology in the Asia Pacific region. Placing the Asia Pacific Region at the center of STS narratives and theoretical concerns, we are looking for submissions that speak to the following themes:

  • Artificial Intelligence and STS
  • Climate change and the environment
  • Digital anthropology
  • Governance of sciences and technology
  • Social perception and acceptance towards science and technology
  • The Future of STS research and education
  • Transportation, mobility, and technology

Other topically and regionally appropriate submissions will be given consideration as well.

Participants are expected to present an early-stage draft paper of 6,000 to a maximum of 12,000 words. We are seeking to publish a selection of these papers for a special issue of an East-Asian STS-focused journal. Please indicate in your submission if you want your paper considered for publication.

500-word abstracts should be submitted to and are due by March 15th, 2024. Please ensure that the abstracts have no author information. The results will be communicated by March 30, 2024. Submissions from all disciplines are welcome, and we especially encourage submissions from faculty in the Asia Pacific region, including Southeast, East, and South Asia.

A limited number of small travel bursaries are available for participants who require financial assistance. Kindly indicate in your submission if you want to be considered for these.
